Swan's Island yarns are produced using all natural ingredients. Many of the yarns are certified organic, meaning that the fiber from the farm,to the spinning mill has been certified to meet international organic standards.
The yarns are dyed with all natural dyes. These dyes are made from roots, leaves and other plant based materials as well as insect shells. Minimal processing makes this Merino yarn incredibly soft.
The yarns are spun at a historic mill in Maine and then kettle dyed in a custom built dye house in Northport, Maine. Like all hand dyed yarns, each dyelot is different and and every skein has it's own character.
There are 7 colors that are dyed with natural indigo - Sky Blue, Marine, Indigo, Teal, Spring Green, Beetroot and Charcoal. Natural Indigo dye will rub onto hands and needles. This is a natural part of dying with Indigo and this is called crocking. The dyers do everything possible to minimize this but cannot guarantee that there won't be some crocking while knitting with these colors. The color is not harmful and will wash off hands with soap and water. We do recommend that you use metal needles while knitting or crocheting with these colors.
